Juneteenth with decARcerate

About this event

Join decARcerate on Friday evening, June 19 to celebrate Juneteenth down by the river! We’ll be barbecuing, playing games, and hanging out in Murray Park. Kids of all ages welcome – there just might be a hidden cooler full of water balloons!

Friday, June 19, 5-8 p.m.
Murray Park, Pavilions 1 & 2
5900 Rebsamen Park Road
(second entrance at the skating banana)

decARcerate celebrates Juneteenth to remember the coordinated resistance that it took to upend the institution of slavery in the United States and to reflect on our unfinished work. When slavery was abolished, the Thirteenth Amendment included an exception to allow slavery and involuntary servitude to be used as punishment for crime. Right now, every person imprisoned in Arkansas is recognized as a legalized slave by the state.

Fannie Lou Hamer and all our ancestors in the movement remind us that “nobody’s free until everybody’s free.” At decARcerate, we dream of a world where everyone is truly free, where we’re helping each other and loving on each other. That’s what our Juneteenth celebration is about.

As we invite you to this event, we are also inviting you to be part of our campaigns and community care projects. Many decARcerate leaders will be at the BBQ and ready to share what we’ve been up to and how you can get involved. Get Loud Arkansas will get folks registered to vote and provide voter education for people with convictions as well.

Spread the word! Share out the flyer on social media and text, or get us to print some flyers for you. If you’d like to bring a dish, volunteer, or set up a table for any partner org that you’re part of, let us know.
